Brussels, 25 November 2022

As our societies deal with long-term structural challenges, such as climate change, ageing, digitalisation and changing labour markets, our public finances and our tax systems will need to adapt. The Commission wants to kick-start a high-level discussion on how taxation can adapt to the fast-paced and fundamental changes ahead. For that reason, EU Finance Ministers, high-level policy makers, academics and civil society will come together in Brussels on Monday 28 November for the “EU Tax Symposium – On the road to 2050: A Tax Mix for the future”.

Discussions will focus on how to best adapt our tax mix to render it future-proof, while safeguarding sufficient tax revenue to deliver fiscal sustainability and assuring an efficient and fair tax system. Participants will also discuss how taxation can support the fight against climate change and environmental degradation, by correcting price signals and influencing behaviours. Moreover, participants will delve into the future of corporate taxation, in a bid to consider how to design a more effective and fairer tax system.

The Tax Symposium aims to stimulate a broad debate, covering all types of taxes, collected at all levels. It will also help to provide orientation for future EU policy-making in this field.

Organised by the European Commission and taking place physically in Brussels, the Symposium will also be live-streamed. Speakers and panellists include Executive Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis, Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni, Commissioner Kadri Simson, Chair of the European Parliament’s FISC Subcommittee Paul Tang MEP, Aurore Lalucq MEP, Minister of Finance of Czechia Zbyněk Stanjura, Spanish First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Economy and Digitalisation Nadia Calviño, State Secretary for Economy and Climate Action of Germany Sven Giegold, as well as other high-level speakers from business and academia.
