Brussels, 31 January 2023
The European Research Council (ERC) announced today the winners of the latest round of Consolidator Grants, aimed at supporting mid-career researchers to establish their teams and conduct pioneering research across all scientific disciplines.
Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, said:
“321 scientists and scholars will receive some €657 million to conduct pioneering research. Their discoveries lay the groundwork for innovation and, ultimately, for growth and economic competitiveness in Europe.”
Researchers will, for example, develop personalised treatments for chronic pain, investigate if fibrous materials can be used as a green alternative to fossil-based plastics, and study what influenced the adoption and abandonment of crops over human history.
Under EU’s Horizon Europe programme, this new round of grants will create an estimated 1,950 jobs for postdoctoral fellows, PhD students and other research staff.
The grantees represent 37 nationalities and will carry out their projects at universities and research centres across 18 EU Member States as well as other countries associated to Horizon Europe. In this latest call, 2,222 applicants submitted proposals and 14% will receive funding.
